JUSTIN FAULKNOR UNVEILS DIY PUPPET MASTERPIECE FOR “GIRL LIKE YOU”
HAMILTON/TORONTO, ON — Rock singer-songwriter Justin Faulknor releases the music video for his new single “Girl Like You,” a handcrafted puppet production that celebrates the spirit of classic practical effects at a time when The Muppets mark their 50th anniversary resurgence.
While audiences await the high-profile return of The Muppet Show, Faulknor quietly spent the past year transforming his creative space into a puppet workshop — designing, sewing, and building an entire cast of original characters from scratch.
A graduate of Sheridan College’s film and television program, Faulknor took on every role in the production: storyboard artist, puppet designer, costume maker, set builder, lead puppeteer, and editor. The project includes ten hand-crafted puppets, complete with miniature instruments and detailed costumes. To refine the movement and capture a classic “Henson-esque” feel, Faulknor consulted experienced puppeteers, including Jogchem Jalink of Sesamstraat.
The single itself, “Girl Like You,” is a vibrant, sixties-inspired rock track drawing on the songwriting traditions of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. Featuring session musicians Federico Cremoli and Sammy Dumanauw, the song blends vintage grooves with Faulknor’s sharp lyrical wit.
“Girl Like You” serves as the lead single from Faulknor’s full-length album, Far From Home, written during the isolation of the pandemic. The album explores themes of distance, hope, and resilience — sentiments reflected in the handmade optimism of the puppet-driven video.
In an era dominated by CGI, Faulknor’s approach is a deliberate nod to analog creativity and practical artistry, offering a refreshing reminder of the power of imagination and craftsmanship.
